We are currently experiencing increased activity
concerning two aspects of life as 100 Marathon Club Members.
It therefore seems a good time to remind members of the rules agreed and
voted for by them and the working practices of the committee. 1. Marathon/Ultra Lists a) To join as a wannabe member a list of at least 50 qualifying marathons/ultras must be given to the club statistician, which currently is me. b) To join as a full member, a list of at least 100 qualifying marathons/ultras must be given to the club statistician. c) Those joining as full members are entitled to receive the medal package having supplied their list of 100. d) To receive the medal package at the event of completing the 100, then a list of marathons/ultras completed so far must be supplied prior to the event, with an expected list through to 100. I am suggesting at '95' marathons/ultras would be the appropriate point, to allow time for the engraving to be done and the medal to be passed to the appropriate person. If I am attending a member’s 100th marathon then I would be happy to make a presentation, but of course you may choose any person you like to make the presentation, or not have a presentation at all. e) Beyond 100 marathons/ultras there is no club requirement for members to supply further lists, but of course we hope that you will and that our published statistics will be accurate and up to date. f) If you would like a 'club pin' on completion of 200, 300 etc, then a list must be supplied for vetting. It is currently the intention that all 'pins' are awarded at the AGM. 2.1 UK & Ireland Qualifying Marathons/Ultras a) If a marathon/ultra is listed on the website (under Events: British Marathon List/British and Foreign Ultras), then this is deemed to be a qualifying event based on the information to hand. b) The committee is by no means the 'font of all knowledge', so marathons/ultras can added to the lists if supporting information is available and given to the statistician/webmaster. c) Generally speaking, a race is acceptable as a road/trail marathon for Club statistics if it is an advertised event with a quoted distance of 26 miles through to 26.99 miles. d) If a distance of 27 miles or more is advertised, the event is counted as an Ultra for Club stats. e) If a race (advertised as a marathon) comes up short, ie. less than 26 miles, then it will be removed from the list of qualifying marathons for future years, although it may be counted for that year. Note 1: If a member does not want a short marathon to count for their personal list, then they should remove it from any lists they supply the club. Note 2: In the age of the GPS, for their personal satisfaction many members are now pledging to run the extra to bring the total distance run up to 26.2 miles where an event measures short by their GPS. f) The following events have been found to be short and are now excluded from the list of qualifying marathons. These exclusions will remain in place for each of these events until evidence is provided to the committee that any future running of a particular event will be at least 26 miles. i) The Cadet March/Spitfire
Walk in March ii) The 2 Waendel Walks events in May. Note 1 : The committee has a standard letter that can be sent out by the secretary to events that have come up short. If the event is dear to your heart, then please seek assurances from the race organisers that the event will be over 26 miles in the following year and forward these assurances to the Club statistician/webmaster to allow the event to be placed back on the qualifying list.Note 2 :i) The Chichester Challenge in July 2010 was slightly short (just under 26 miles), but assurances have already been given that this will be slightly longer next year. i2.2 Qualifying events outside UK & Ireland The well known overseas marathons/ultras do not require vetting but any "unknown" events appearing on members lists will be looked at on an individual basis. It would be useful to the club statistician if members participating in odd overseas events could provide links to race websites or documentation supporting the distance advertised. GENERAL NOTE: Obviously all members are free to run whatever events they wish and can count them as whatever they like in their personal records. However, only qualifying events will 1) count towards members’ totals shown within the club statistics as seen on the club website, & 2) for joining/upgrading to full membership and subsequent ‘pins’ at 200, 300 etc. Roger Biggs
